While I’d claim contemporary opera to be of greater personal interest than standard repertoire, Ireland is now producing so many wonderful singers that all opportunities to hear them must be eagerly grasped. In May of this year Irish National Opera in partnership with Irish Chamber Orchestra gave five performances of The Magic Flute at The Gaeity Theatre, Dublin, with an additional performance in Wexford and another in Limerick. So many great voices – and so many of them Irish. Gavin Ring, (on stage almost throughout with no double for alternative nights) was utterly compelling. Seemingly this production marks his last performance as a baritone – his voice is moving up in register and from here on he will seek tenor roles.
